VFD for 5 HP AC Motor

+1 on what Greg said, replace the capacitors, they only cost around $10, much cheaper than $250+ you'll spend on a VFD.

I'll check into getting the capacitors replaced, but really want to get the 3 phase motor on it again.
I can always use the single phase on another project.

If you choose to go with a VFD, consider carefully the rating of the VFD.
Nearly all VFDs are able to run with single phase input.
Most will not achieve full output with single phase input.
Unless the VFD is specifically designed to give full output with single phase input,
it must be de-rated by a factor of 1.7 (the square root of 3).
The rule of thumb is to use a VFD that is rated at twice the HP of the motor you want to run.
I used a 10HP VFD to run my 5 HP lathe.
