I went to an pre-auction view today. As I was leaving I noticed a bin full of scrap. I asked about it and they said to go ahead and take what I wanted.
There were many 6" x 2-7/8" x 1-3/16" blocks I asked what they were and thought the guy said for vise jaws. They're not aluminum but they do machine just not very nice.
Any idea what material? I looked around a bit but don't see where you can buy blank plates. Maybe these were just ordered this size, nothing special about them?

Pretty easy to test the specific gravity unless they are alloyed with a variety of metals. == Jack

How? Just weigh them as we know the volume?
Sitting in the bin they looked exactly like aluminum until I picked one up, heavy. Oh and they are magnetic.

Whatever it is , it's Blanchard ground . ( at least the bottom one )
