Just picked up this old salt. Amazingly table, knee, cutter head all move. Took about 25 minutes to free the ram. Some pitting there but very serviceable. Removed cutter head cause it's the smallest piece and my time is very limited right now. See Pics of goop inside. Gear box levers don't move but as I said can rotate cutter head by hand when turning motor. Soaking levers in PB Blaster. This will be a slow go. But hope you guys can help with questions that might arise.

Nasty goo, but better than no goo. Welcome to the forum. Several VN folks here, that I imagine will be along soon. Mike
 
My thinking exactly. At least it turns. Thanks for the welcome! After a little cleaning, quite a bit of slop developed in the bevel gear. Think it may be keyway ware. Need a spanner to disassemble. Hopefully by next weekend.

The mating gear has a divot in the middle of about every forth gear. When I get to that section, I figure file or stone each tooth and it shout be serviceable? 20200209_140150.jpg20200209_111901.jpg

After soaking rear gear box in PB Blaster. Plungers moved and gears shifted. So again there is some basic movement. With such a vintage machine I'm amazed.

20200216_111747.jpgDiscovered some damage to one of the end caps where the bearing seats.

And this is exactly why I joined this site. Looking for ideas to repair this... I could bore out damaged area and freeze plug it with new material then re-machine in the lathe or bore it out and lock-tite new material then re-machine. In any event, I don't think a bearing seal it going to work if it's not repaired. Looking for some insights from anyone with ideas.

Another question, I'm assuming the grooves are for oil or grease to flow thru, but with new updated bearings are the grooves still necessary? I have no problem re-machining them back but with updated "new technology" bearings maybe they are not necessary. Any thoughts?

I have fond memories of a summer I spent in WP.
 
It could be brazed up if you, or someone you know has the required skills, and then machined. As it's mainly just about retaining the seal, you could also epoxy (JB weld, or similar) it up after a thorough cleaning, and I'm sure it would do the job. Cheers, Mike
 
Didn't think of brazing, that's an idea. Will chew on that and see what other ideas we get.

That is less destructive than boring out plugging and re-machining. If it was all bored out, would it require line boring? Or am I over thinking this?
 
Can you post a picture of the serial number? Everyone thought that the first production VN12 was 5000. Your gears are not typical either.
