What would it be used for?

As a standard for producing spindle tapers and adaptor tapers for anything being manufactured to the standard taper, such as the taper shanks of drills, reamers, etc. and the bores of machine spindles and reducing sleeves, etc. The gage would be used to test standard depths and fits of anything that needed to fit a standard taper, they were inspection and production tools in producing tooling.
