It is used to mount square/rectangular stock when turning between centers.

Those are grinder dogs. Can also be used as lathe dogs by driving with a bolt in a face plate or some similar arrangement.

Thank you gentlemen for your responses/info. My mind kept going toward for use as some kind of press tool for holding round stock but I knew it was too weak for that. I thought it may be reversible but now the bolt slots opposite the "V" makes sense.

Made by the Ready Tool Company, I have one the same pattern, but possibly a size larger. The name is not marked on them, buy mine was in the box with a label, they make other styles of dogs, centers and other machine accessories.
