What is this?

Sorting flotsam and jetsam in the shop tonight I came across this device.
It’s about 2” in diameter and 2.5” long.
It clearly measures something.
The graduations around the dial are very odd.
0, 5, 1, 1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 4, 4
The fixed scale is marked 0,5,10
Other than the graduation marks there are no other markings.
It is butter smooth and has a total travel of approximately 3/8”

Just some special purpose micrometer

It is a micrometer head. would be attached to a custom made holder for a shop made inspection gauge. Might be able to swap with the working end of a micrometer, to give a large knob for waht ever reason.

Vaguely similar to something like this but not quite. Looks like it fits into a precision bore and then the plunger measures. This one is used in injection mould work I think. I’m puzzled by the weird numbering and graduations.

If I could devise a way to hold it I might be able to figure out what increments the divisions are for.

Could you drill a hole to fit the larger of the polished barrel diameters and then position that with the plunger against a dial indicator?

Yes I could do that. I probably have a piece of aluminum that would do ni as a makeshift holder.
Perhaps tomorrow.
