I have no clue on these two pieces. I just grabbed them 'cause they looked interesting.
The black holder has a 5/8" bore in the end and the cap screws on.
The 'hook' has two fine rack and pinions on it.

I wonder if the hook thingie has something to do with holding microscope slides?

We have a winner! I knew I recognized it but couldn't remember from where. It holds and positions the slide on the microscope stage, hence the fine movement in both axes.

Pic # 1 . It could be used for a slitting saw with a straight shank arbor . May not be the intended original purpose , but that's would I would make out it .

I'll turn over the slide holder to my Better-Half and she if she can flip it, the arbor hunk will go into the 'Future Projects' bin.
