What to do with a vintage Mitutoyo Height Gauge Missing the Dog Leg Scribe?

TIA everyone. Lesson's learned, thankfully not a too expensive of a lesson. Scribes with the carbide are too tall as I'm sure many others have taken lesson's on. Any uses for the thing without having to do math each time it's used? "If" I had a surface grinder I'd make one. Sadly that's a big "if" not likely to change anytime soon.

Define "tall," Ron: do you mean the height of the shank that goes into the clamp? SHARS has a number of different shank scribes available

I have these:

20260211 Height Gage Scribes.jpeg
The one at the top is HSS with a radiused nose; 9.7mm high x 4.7mm thick.

The next two are Carbide tipped; 0.50" high x 0.25" thick (bottom of the two has a Mitutoyo logo stamped into the end of the shank).

The one at the bottom is from my 12" Aerospace twin-beam gage; 9.0mm x 9.0mm.

If any of the top three would work you can have them.

I learned this while shopping for a height gage. If it doesn't have the scribe (many don't), it doesn't matter how cheap it is. Look very carefully before pulling the trigger.

Shouldn't be hard to find a replacement . :dunno:

I’m sorry you’re in that situation Ron. Only by purely stupid luck did I not fall into that. I was trying to solve the problem of never having the right size snug for the different indicators I have. In the long process of searching eBay for the biggest selection lot of snugs did I run onto a large collection of snugs but in with a Starrett 242 vernier master gauge along with a set of scribes, the clamp for the scribes and attachments with a B&S test indicator. The listing was for the 242 but being a vernier nobody wanted it and the raft of other stuff was just tossed in. Even with this ton of stuff it’s still hard to find the right snug and I can only imagine what a cluster it would be to find the right scribe and clamp for it as each maker has their own proprietary setup.

I hope you find one, don’t give up there’s one out there somewhere.

Do you know what you need as far as measurements ?

The replacement scribes and brackets are so expensive, you're often better off passing on the 'bargain' unit that's missing the scribe, and waiting for an intact example with the scribe to roll around. I watched for over a year to find an intact, clean example at a reasonable cost. Would like to find one of the little vernier magnifier lenses Mitutoyo made for them, though. Every used magnifier I've seen, the lens is cracked.

Which model did you get @Shiseiji ? If it is the same model as I have, I'd be happy to provide some measurements of the scribe for you.
Thanks much for the offer. Can you believe it? No model# to be found. Maybe it's not even Mitutoyo. Honestly looks like if the carbide was removed from the tip the height would be in the adjustment adjustment envelope. I have a Brown & Sharp vernier that works fine for what I do, so I'm not toolless. Just thought I'd ask and see what suggestions folks have.

When I put in some real effort to find something before I posted, most of the hits used your advise almost word for word.
