I got a MachTach tachometer for my RF31. I put one on a lathe and it works great. One button and it changes from rpm to sfm. Surface speed. So can input the endmill diameter and dial in the sfm needed.

I am running 220 with a vfd so variable speed with a 20 turn pot.

Where is the best place to mount the sensor? I was planning on putting it up to the lowest motor pulley on the quill, putting a 5/8 piece of tubing on that pulley and have the reflective strip on that.

For me the best place turned out to be mounting 6 rare earth magnets on the bottom of the front pulley. Marked the pulley first, then cut some sponges one inch square and covering them with waxed paper. JB Weld on the magnet with the sponge holding it in place overnight at the 6 spaces around the pulley. Then mounting the Hall effect sensor under them. Has worked fine with no problems.
