Win. 1886 takedown conversion questions

Marlin Takedown photos.
If you look closely at the first photo showing the top of the breech area, the lever has taper built into it and a matching taper on the surface of the block. As the lever closes the taper takes up any space and makes for a nice tight lock up. In fact this is a problem with Marlin Takedowns as people have miss understood how it works. To open the rifle has to be held with the left side facing up and this removes the pressure on the wedge and allows for it to move. So many of these rifles have been mangled by people beating on the lever and lower area. There are marks on this rifle on the bottom surface clearly seen in the third photo. My 1894 was even worst.

Great job on pictures. Al

I had a Model 55 years ago. In comparing the Winny to the Marlin, the Marlin was better. Much more solid, ie no slop once assembled. Complexity of the Marlin had its advantages verses the simple Winchester set up.

Is that large screw head the adjuster? I see the locking tab that latches into the receiver if I think right.
Pierre

Yes. Can’t move 1/4 turn without it being too tight. Also right on locking tab. Barrel has interrupted threads. 1/4 turn on or off. Bolt has to be back some to install barrel assembly.

Thanks so much for helping me out....couple more questions

Does anyone have or can measure the thread depth on the takedown magazine tube and the shoulder depth of the magazine tube.....I'm thinking those threads have to be awful shallow or the wall depth of the tube awful thick.

I believe the tpi is 14 and was square threads versus 60 degree V threads.

On my Model 55, the threads on the tube were very shallow and took about 5 turns or so to release if my memory is correct. Square threads I am pretty sure, I sold that one a couple decades ago.
