This is a group with many talents, so I thought I'd ask here.

I've got some "real wrought iron", pre-1860's, kinda rare objects, that I'm thinking of working on.

I'd like to do some light milling and silver soldering.

Any one work with real wrought iron and has any advice?
Can it be soldered OK?

Thanks,
PaulS

what material are you trying to join to the wrought? If it is the same wrought iron or steel, simply oxy-acetylene the two together or get flux coated brazing rods available at most welding supply stores, this would be cheaper than silver solder and just as simple.

Blacksmith wrought iron welding used Borax, heat, and a hammer skillfully used. Silver solder/braze is much simpler, but may depend on the material you are joining.

GWilson could fill you in on the smith method, I'm sure.

A host of information.
Some of the regulars can be a bit "superior", however if you post a polite and very informative, detailed question, you should get a good reply. There is a few thousand years of knowledge over there.

Cheers Phil
