Hello All,

Still working on identifying what WW 2 Navy unit our old, Hawaii Hawaii Railway Society 1942 SB 10L was assigned to during WW2.

I purchased the original order card from South Bend Co/Grizzly tool Co earlier this week. SB says the lathe was shipped in early 1943 to the Oakland Naval Aviation supply Depot. From there it found its way to Pearl Harbor where it was surplused to the Hawaii Railway Society, early 70’s. But we do not know what Navy unit it was assigned to out of the Oakland Supply Depot, or how it contributed to the war effort - which is important to know as the HRS is a narrow gauge RR historical museum with an important remit to preserve and interpret early day Hawaiian railroad equipment. A good bit of our motive power and rolling stock is WW2 ex-USN Pearl Harbor Naval Station Railway equipment.

Also has anyone been successful trying to chase down WW2 Naval Supply Depot records? If so, where did you find them?

Iam looking for help to identify or interrupt a possible unit inventory stamp found on the tailstock end of the lathe. The stamp is: “MA E127” (see photo). Hoping someone here might be an amateur naval historian, or maybe has seen something similar on other SB lathes or other WW 2 era machinery.

Note: the abbreviation M A potentially could mean ‘Marine Aviation’. I assume USN Naval Supply also provided USMC equipment in WW2. But this is just a guess. Iam really hoping to confirm unit assignment, or definitively interrupt what the stamp means.

Thanks much for any assistance anyone could provide.

Regards
Glenn B.
