I want to put a hand winch on my old shop press tomorrow. Can anyone tell me how the wire rope is routed. I have looked at several on line but I can't find one with a good clear view.

Thanks, Bob

Bob,
Dunno if you have the room but on my home built press I was able to fit my winch inside. Made it look a bit neat and tidier.

Whichever way you go you will need some pulleys. I just made mine. They are little rollers. Steel tube running on a greased axle. Works for me.

Easiest way is to put a divider in the winch drum and employ 2 cables.

If you insist on doing it with a single cable you'll need a few garage door cable sheaves to accomplish the job.

Which path do you want to take?

I see what you are saying, if I can figure out how to make a divider that would be great, but the cheap Harbor Freight winch I have is a stamped spool. Don't think it comes apart.

So if I decided to go the other route, how would the cables be routed. Is it possible to draw a diagram?

Bob,
That was a trailer winch I got for $80 from the boat shop. How does that compare to the HF price? Its able to be fully disassembled easily. I just removed the pin that secures the winch drum to the spindle and replaced it with a longer bolt. Modified a panel washer to catch the cable and secure it. Removed all the cable from the drum, found the centre of the cable and just bent it in half around the bolt.

The cable winds on and off well, without any tangling or other problems. Even if you need to mount the winch outside the frame you just need to route the 2 cables up one leg, then take 1 across the top, and then lead each cable down each leg. I didnt see the need for pulleys as its a pretty slow movement, minimal operation, and the load is not left suspended.

Cheers Phil

For $22, I might just get one to lift my HF 20 ton table. Even though its not that heavy with nothing on it, it always has the plates and sometimes the brake on it, so it would be a lot quicker and less awkward to just lift or lower it with a crank. I'm in. :))

Yes, this is the same one I purchased but it was $28.00.

IF the attachment works you'll have a famed FranzCad sketch suitable for printing, framing and wall hanging.

You'll need either 3 or 4 sheaves, depending on winch location. 4 if the winch is mounted on the side of a vertical, 3 if the winch is located on the header.

This routing will give you a 2/1 reduction in the load the winch picks.

Anchor end of cable to header
Down to sheave on bottom of table
Up & over sheave on header
Across header
Down to sheave on bottom of table
Up to header and onto drum, or over sheave changing cable direction to drum.

Garage door sheaves are available in quantities on ePay, and should cost about 2 bucks each. 1/8 cable is sufficient to lift the table.

If you want to make a divider for the drum the easiest way is to cut a donut the size of the drum cheek, cut out enough to slide it over the axle, slip into place and tack weld in place. View attachment 65950

Didn't get time to work on it today Franz, but hopefully in the morning. Thanks for the drawing and input. I am sure I can come up with something now.

I think the ratio will be 4/1, not 2/1.
It is 4 to 1. Good catch! FOR EVERY 4 INCHES OF CABLE MOVEMENT AT THE DRUM, you get 1 inch of table movement and 4 times the leverage.
