Can anybody perhaps help. I need to drill a number of holes in reinforced concrete and have so far hit rebar in three holes approx 4 inches down. The hole sizes vary between 3/4 and 1 inch in dia. What would be the most cost efective way of dealing with this problem? The steel varies between 1/2 and 5/8 inches .

Masonry drills have carbide tips so I would think they should handle the rebar just fine as long as you sharpen them with positive rake

I just normally drill right through it with the hammer drill. Most concrete bits will do fine. There are better ones that will drill through it easier.

There are special rebar bits made for drilling rebar in concrete.

Typically a hole is drilled in concrete with a rotary hammer drill with a carbide tipped bit. When rebar is encountered, the hammerdrill is removed and the rebar bit of the same size is inserted in the hole in a non-hammer drill, the rebar is drilled, then the hammerdrill reinserted in the hole and continued drilling. All that being said, there are rotary hammer bits made that are capable of drilling rebar in concrete. The problem with hitting rebar in concrete is you never hit the center of the rebar, it is usually off to the side and tends to jam a two edged carbide bit.

One note of concern is if you are drilling a post tensioned slab if so stop and have an engineer come take a look. If you cut a cable they can shoot out the edge of the slab and cause some serious damage.
