To Seize Or Not To Seize

Iv got some old vws and milk of magnesia gets used as an anti seize on the spark plugs sometimes. Apparently the military also uses it or used to use it on the igniters for jet engines. Iv never tried it but it supposedly works well.

Translate please. What is VWS? I worked on Jet Engines in the military and never heard of this. We used Anti Seize Compound. I can't recall the Mil spec.

My guess is VW = Volkswagon, Bill. Typical air cooled IC engine, and would probably benefit from anti seize on the spark plug threads.

I have used the Permatex silver anti-seize (#133) for the past 27+ years now and it works great for the majority of items.

When I need hi-heat protection I use the Loctite copper anti-seize.

A lot of co-workers have switched to the stick style of anti-seize but I can't bring myself to change as I have been so happy with the #133 Permatex for so long. Has never let me down.

Whimps ! :D

The stuff I use is nickel "Nuclear Grade" rated to 5000 degrees F. I have friend in the nuclear reactor overhaul industry who sends me his half empty cans.

For those of you who don't use much, LocTite now puts the stuff in small tubes of about 2 oz.

PS. I believe Permatex is now owned by LocTite.

20 years or so ago I inherited a half-empty 8-oz bottle of silver LocTite anti-sieze. It's nearly empty. Maybe I'll buy a bottle of the copper stuff to pass on to my heirs.

Yeah volkswagens. It always seems to start an argument whenever its brought up But iv read enough about it to think its credible and I heard it from someone who used it in turbines and I believe him. I think it came from General Electric originally.

Not sure I would actually want anything half used from a reactor overhaul in my workshop - does it glow when you turn the lights out?

Just so happen last night, I had to reverse the jaws on my 15" 4-jaw chuck. They looked a little dry, had a can of never seize handy, put a dab on the threads of the jaws. Works great! A little dab is all you need, it goes along ways!!!

I was told once that you should never use anti seize as a lubricant on anything moving (ways, lead screws, etc) as it is an abrasive. The discussion was specifically regarding copper slip, but I think it would apply to any of the metal based anti seize products. They are designed to stop stationary parts from seizing but will cause wear if used on any regularly moving parts.

I don't know how accurate this information was but I have always followed it since. What is other peoples experience?
