Hmmm...still learning how to setup and use my Holdridge, but I could maybe see me attempting something like this in the future. Interesting conversation piece.
I made my toy on my old 11 in Logan using my ball turner, 5c collet with stop ,live cup center, hand made form tools to form doughnut, one for outside and another for forming inside. And another tool to trepan ring apart . No glue used. My Avator was 50 times harder to make than this toy.

On the captive nut, here is one I made some time ago. Also, another variation and mind bender is the bolt that will only unscrew one way and then screw in one one way baffling guests (cam locking action).
Fabrickator, I have to hand it to you! What you have in that photo is the ideal wedding gift: The goblet and rings for the wedding day, and the cigarette for after events to occur later in the evening!
Yeah Terry,
You're one of a select few that's noted that. Of course, my initial intent was to scale the slender stem. My late photographer/artist friend noted it as you did when he took the pic.
Too funny!! I realized the original intent, but couldn't help but snicker at the other idea!! Either way, the goblet and rings turned out very nice and made a beautiful wedding gift.
