[Source] Qctp Tool Holder Brands---shars, Phase Ii, Dorian, Aloris

Thanks to Ulma Doc I'm running an Armstrong piston post.
The Aloris tool holders fit well.
Regardless, I'm glad I spent time with the lantern and the square turret before I made the jump.

If you have a Fastenal store near you, they will probably have good brands on hand.

Dovetail not cut square? I have never seen that! Anything is possible with Asian stuff!
I agree faststenal is great for many fastners
As for the hess toolpost , the dovetail was .010" larger at the top of the post and right on at the base.
I inverted the uninstalled post and tried the holders i already had. They would travel about half the travel before the resistance was enough to stop travel.
I measured the end that was right and filed then scraped the dovetail back into shape.
The QC guy must have been off the day my holder left the line- i miss good ol' Inspector 12

Another here with the Shars AXA toolposts. I bought the complete set of the wedge type they sell. I suppose if I had a machine shop I might spend more money, but I've been very happy with mine and have had no issues. I suppose they are only blocks of metal, but the fit and finish is good and they do what they are intended to do. The knurling tool isn't the best, but for light use and aluminum it also performs ok.

For me it has to be Aloris.

Once I hit the lottery that is. In the mean time imports work just fine.

My 14" Lathe came with the Aloris BXA post and tool holders which were well used. While suffering from sticker shock as I looked at the Aloris AXA system for my 10" Clausing, I ordered up the Phase ll post and holders. To put the 2 brands side by side, it is quite obvious the real Aloris is definitely the better product. As others have reported, the locating screws and thumb nuts on the Phase ll are sloppy. I haven't discovered the soft set screws yet, but I am glad to read that they are US thread, making replacements much easier to source out.

I picked up a Dorian holder from Zoro on their last sale. It's a bit oversize compared to the Phase II and holds up to 3/4" shank vs 5/8". OTOH, it has an internal tooth lock washer for the adjusting screw locknut instead of the wavy spring washer on the Phase II.

I'll do a side-by-side photo comparison later.

Notably, the dovetail depth on the Phase II and PM tool holders weren't quite the the same on both sides. I didn't test the tool holders for squareness.

The Phase II holder can only handle 1/2" and 5/8" shanks. The P-M holder could handle anything from about 3/16" to 5/8". The Dorian holder wasn't able to deal well with 1/2" tool, but could handle both 5/8" and 3/4" tools.

Well, nuts. Do tables not work here?
