Was wondering how you guys go about squaring these since the insert is wider it works great and I've got it square a couple times but not every time maybe use a shim against the chuck ?? 20160108_163621.jpg

small machinist square between the part and the tool, or putting the tool across the face of the part.
Squaring to the chuck is last option - I'm not parting the chuck, I'm parting the work.

I usuall square the qctp with the tail stock quill with machinest sqare . More room to work with on that side. Has always worked well for me.

All recommendations above are good. It depends how deep I'm parting (or grooving). If it is not deep, then I'll square it against the chuck (perhaps with a spacer, perhaps with out the blade, just square the holder). If I intend to go deep, I'll run a dial along the blade.

Indicator against the tool body, if a manufacturer wanted to sell such insert holders why would they not make the insert pocket parallel to the body? If one is unable to achieve repeatable results you would never buy another tool from said manufacturer.

eyeball it to the chuck face, but I have lots of experience also what one member said above it depends on how thick the material is if its thin then eyeball is ok. thicker material requires more diligence, also note that some of the carbide parting tools are square on the cutting edge and you can note if the tool bit is hitting all the way across as it comes in contact with the part adjust as required as you start parting. bill
