2011 Elantra Front Strut Issue

Neighbors was told one of the struts needed changing. Drove it home and we found this! I think there is a problem. Should not have been released from the shop!

blimey! On the plus side, all the rust in the wheel well lets lots of light through to work on the strut :) Did the top hat rust out or the part of the wheel well that it attaches too? Doesn't even look there's a top hat on it..
 
The tops are still in place held by the 3 studs and nuts. The top bearing has let go and I will look them over to see why. They are not supposed to come apart like that.

that is weird, those are solid steel stampings. I'd have expected any other part to have rusted or come apart than that. Must have been interesting to drive!
 
For those that have never lived where they salt the road, 10 years is a long time to keep a car driven in the winter....

The only thing unusual here is that the shop let them drive it away.

A respectable shop owner/mechanic would not release a car in that condition .
