Why is there so much blank space at the top of the pages that takes up nearly 25% of screen real estate?

When scrolling through notifications, after every selection the screen repaints with all that "wasted" space, limiting the amount displayed in a pull down.

I would need screen shots to fully understand what the problem is here. Also, are you on a desktop, laptop or mobile device when viewing the site?

It's probably for advertising.

It's the header and yes it is for advertising for non-registered guests.
