Yes, this is the gear box for the Van Norman dividing head. Mine appears to be completely unused - having only suffered a few repaints during normal factory maintenance cycles over the years. I'm trying to get it apart for documentation - but it is fighting me. Most nuts are 25/32". The little direction change gear box refuses to let it's cover off. It is aligned with 2 tight dowels. It appears the brace requires opening up the little bugger before it can be separated. Asking for advise.

I don't see any dowel pins in your pictures. Where are they?

What are you trying to separate from what?

What part are you calling the "brace"?

Are you trying to remove the hinge pin(s) to remove the pan-like part (cover?) from the mount?

If that's it, I would try to tap the hinge pin out (hoping it is one pin). If it's too tight or if it's two pins into blind holes (and you don't have access to EDM), I would seriously consider leaving it assembled. Warming everything up with a torch might free the pin (if it's one pin).

Sorry, extropic, I should just document rather than act as if those who came before me will chime in. This is (to my knowledge) the only factory documentation on this gearbox.

INDEX TABLE 04b.jpg

In the drawing, there is a little direction reverse gearbox. The pic below will show that there are 2 dowels to align the cover & 4 bolts to hold it on.

More to come.

@BROCKWOOD

It looks like, after removing the direction change gear box from the rest, you could remove the four SHCSs and push the two shafts, from the rear, to separate the cover.

@extrpic
One would think it as simple as that. The banjo on the other side has it captured. I have a plan though. Don't like it, but find no other choice.

The dividing head splines are the same as the various subhead splines.

At last the cover is off!

28 tooth 1 to 1. Now on to the banjo.

That (in bold) meant to take the banjo off, remove the mounting bolts, etc. etc. I guess I needed to write a more detailed procedure.

Regardless, glad to see you you're satisfied.
