New Mini Mill Bed- What Material?

That's why I suggested to shim the new top to the bed. The tooling plate is probably flatter than the bed. Besides that, I would imagine that the bed is larger than the work envelope on the mill.

Drill and tap small ( ~10-32 UNF) holes in the plate and use brass tipped screws. No messing with shims, just adjust with a hex key.
 
Great suggestions here. I don't have much experience scraping but will look into it. The effective work envelope is indeed smaller than the bed, which is why the tooling plate seems like a good place to start. Andre, great tip on the brass tipped screws!!! Never would have thought of that!
