After a year (+one month) I finally mounted a couple of vises on the butcher block bench.
I had positioned the top so that the (6) holes from a previous life were along the backside.
Bad planning. The better half and I had to rotate the top in order to reorient the holes.
I did up some subplates out of oak and then used those holes.
I couldn't bring myself to drill any more holes into the bench.
Then I did up some soft jaws out of maple. I've got a plate of delrin/nylon around somewhere but couldn't find it.
