I just cast for fun and make parts that are not critical. Mostly use automotive scrap castings. The most difficult thing I've encountered is hydrogen bubbles. Read up on it before you spend too much time on an important casting. Caution, There is a lot of BS on YouTube!
I like using ally wheels for my scrap but I've used anything I can get hold of including all the things to avoid as mentioned above.
So far I've found that an oxidising flame and pouring at the lowest temperature that the ally flows at reduces the hydrogen porosity.
