There is one here in SA that says they also cater to hobbyist Prices are a higher than ordering it but they have had almost anything I need in stock and sell what you order if you want a piece 6 inches long they cut it. If you want it 2 foot they cut it. If they have a piece that is just over they ask if you want the whole thing. Westbrook metals, about 5 miles from the house.

Yep, I remember those guys. Glad they're still around. There's a similar outfit here in Dallas (Metals4U) that I buy from when I just need small amounts of something. They are higher priced than the larger volume suppliers, but convenience has a cost.

we used to have a similar place here in townsville that did that with aluminium and also allowed you to rummage through their drops bin.
They sold out and the new company advertise they cut to size but what they really mean is you order the whole length or sheet and they will cut that to your size. Grrrrrr.

It must be nice to be able to go to a scrap yard or have a supplier that has everything locally. Unfortunately , I live in the arm pit of the world and it is very very hard to just go buy any metal without buying a whole twenty foot stick, but I have found an online supplier that gets me any size I need and just what I need. His prices are decent and he uses USPS boxes and only charges what the post office charges him.

I was going to Metal Supermarket and getting cut-to-length stuff there, until I discovered that the metal scrapyard on the way to Metal Supermarket was MUCH cheaper per-foot for the same metal, and also did halves [you could either get the whole length, or 1/2] without the cutting charge that MS has. Now, unless I need a really small piece, I get more metal for less money...

OK, who is it?

NOw if that is routine maint, you want to come do routine maint down here. I'm quite sure we could find a few machines that need that kind of routine maint.

  1. It took me three days of squeezing a little time here and there but I got my 2x72 belt grinder mystery metal drive wheel mounted on the motor shaft and turned between centers. The tubing I used was very eccentric (ID and OD were far from concentric) and the interrupted cut revealed some significant rigidity and chatter issues I was previously unaware of. I cleaned up the terrible cut with a vertical sheer bit and emory cloth. Still some cosmetic flaws but it will work great.
Center is flat, 2.5 degrees of taper on the outer 25% and 1 degree of taper between. dd917e6373c4d84e9bd648e96bf7ec8f.jpg
