The spindle dust cover on the Hendeys is a brass ring that threads onto the end of the spindle bearing. It is designed to be removed with a pin spanner... most of the time they get taken off by someone using a punch and hammer in the pin spanner holes to force them to unscrew. This destroys the holes and deforms the thin brass cover, making them even more difficult to install and remove.
The one for this lathe was no exception... all 4 pin holes were ruined, and someone had drilled a new hole... and then ruined it... the entire cover was pretty beat up.
This morning, I chucked the cover up in the Soith Bend and picked up the existing (and out of round) thread with an internal threading bar, then *just* cleaned up the threads... I didn't power the South Bend up, just engaged the half nuts and turned the chuck by hand to clean the threads up.
I then used a burr in my Dremel to clean the ruined holes up, then filled them by TIG brazing with silicon bronze. I then skimmed the outer diameter on the South Bend and polished the front face...
It fits... it is still snug, but not difficult to thread on. There are still some dents and dings, especially on the corner radius, but it is a lot better than it was.
I will eventually re-establish the spanner holes around the outside... in case it ever needs to be removed again.
