I made this bed protector a while back for my Impala lathe. The curtain is made from oil impregnated canvas. It fixes to the carriage via a couple of slots cut in aluminium angle attached to the end of the canvas.
The canvas is rolled around a PVC pipe, the ends of the pipe have bearings in them and the unit is mounted under the chuck by an angle iron bracket I welded up and fixed to the headstock.
Also rolled around the PVC pipe is a length of 6mm cord, it passes behind the headstock loops around a couple of pulleys and has a 30mm steel weight which slides up and Dow inside a 30mm PVC pipe affixed to the back of the lathe stand and tensions the canvas bed protector.
