Might I suggest that that cob together part of Mike Freeman's conversion.

A simple speed control for a stepper is a trivial thing. For just a power feed the additional accuracy of the ball screw isn't really needed. At least this way you're doing something that you don't have to repeat if/when you decide to step or servo your mill.
 
I was thinking more along the lines of:

Make out an extension (maybe even on the side without the handle).
