Resolved Broken or orphaned threads.....

Hello Admins!

Several times I have tried to access older existing threads but things seem to get into a weird state.

Here's another one I found today:

Even though I am logged into HM and have other tabs open and working fine the page above shows:

If I try to get one of the attached files I see:

What I have tried:
-logging out of HM, clearing cookies, logging back in and retry thread
-allowing cookies by default in the browser for both "http://www.hobby-machinist.com" and "https://www.hobby-machinist.com"

I am using FireFox version 112.0.2 (64-bit) on Win7.
I will attempt to reproduce it on a Win10 machine too and post back with results.

Okay, it DOES seem to work from my win10 laptop with the same version of FireFox.

It still does NOT work on this Win7 desktop system.
So I guess it is still some kind of left over data in the local browser..... so far I have resisted deleting all cookies and all cache, and just removed the HM site specific ones. Perhaps I need to delete all saved browser info to fix this......

okay, I kept looking at it and figured something out..... it seems to be a problem with that first link I posted.

If I instead go here:

then everything is fine. I see the page and am still logged in, and I can get the attached drawings.

The only difference I see in the two links is "http" vs. "https".
I guess the original link I followed was old, saved before the upgrade to the secure version of http.

So I guess this is "user error" and I'll just have to learn to add the "s" if/when I see that stuff again.

Yes I think so, I just gotta remember for future when there's an old link that specifies "http" I can still use it, but then when it looks like it logged me out, simple add the "s" to make it "https" in the browser url line. It's manual and depends on my failing memory, but otherwise it seems like a solid workaround.

Yes, sorry I'm late to the party. This is what is referred to as an http access issue. It is a security protocol implemented a few years ago across the internet aimed at making interoperability between browsers, operating systems and websites more secure and functional.

The most noticeable failure of this change is when you try to access a hyperlink or old page that is coded with the old "http" vs. the new more secure "https".

Because of the difference, your browser doesn't recognize the security protocols on the old page and will not recognize your cookies. Because the "stay logged in" function of the website is the sole function of our cookie, you get automatically logged out.

In order to access the page, just add an s to the end of the http portion of the url and you will be taken back to the page, sometimes you will even be logged back in automatically because the cookie is recognizing the security protocol again.

And if you happen to see old "http" links - report them in the site issues forum and someone on staff will get them updated.
