I second the brake cleaner. It's what I use too. I also use Christy salts and they are very forgiving when it comes to oil. If I miss a spot it still blues up real nice and a small amount doesn't affect my salts
I use brake cleaner in the bore and acetone on the exterior when rust bluing rifle barrels. The bore is actually plugged when in the tank but just a trace of oil will ruin the bluing!
