I can't imagine that such a long tool shank would be rigid enough to do much work without some other support; HUGE lathe??? That tool looks to be only 7/16 or 1/2" square, not so very huge, just long.
Thanks, I wonder if I could use it on a small lathe to turn down aluminum and brass without issue? Obviously the stick-out would be very short, not even an inch.

Tool length depends on the complexity ( shape ) of the part being machined . Sometimes very long tools are needed to bypass obstacles such as boring behind shoulders on very large lathes . Most of the time these are shop made tools as they are custom tooling job specific . I have a lot of these types of tools from over the years . As far as you using it , sure . You won't be hanging it out but you'll need a CXA 3/4" holder at least.
