Headstock -leveling- ?

I've learned it can take a day. Your initial adjustments.... take a few minutes between each one and clean up the shop. Things settle. Then check it again the next day... because things settle, and it takes time for big heavy things to move/bend.

It depends which end is larger. If the headstock end is larger by .00015" that is unacceptable. If the tailstock end is then that is acceptable.
The acceptable range is 0-.0008" over 12".

I'm curious why one way is OK and one is not?

And... doing the work I'm doing... Less is better... regardless of what is commonly known as "good"

I believe it has to do with tool pressure.
If you want the specs for every machine tool look up Testing Machine Tools by Dr. Georg Schlesinger.

That could make sense... with a big stickout, the "tailstock" end "should" be larger because of deflection.

I strive for perfection but .00015" is more than adequate for the gun work I do.

The trick is to get it dead nuts... and then not check it again for a very long time :)
