Hi

Could we get some help finding a pair or set of gears for this project?

We will leave it there for now

Bob

It is for about a 2-5 hp engine

It is a go kart like little chassis

Not enough information. Sounds like maybe you need a gear box. Pictures of what you are working on would help.

Right angle gears sounds like bevel gears. But then that begs the question of straight cut or helical cut. Personally, I would look at robbing a differential (diff) of the gears the half shafts slide into, failing that, maybe look to using a couple of the star gears (the smaller gears on the cross shaft across the center of the diff mechanism). It might be an idea that could prove whether the idea is viable or not.

Why not chain and sprockets? Or cog belt? There’s a reason why nobody does gears……

Boston Gear is one supplier of most anything gear related:

I cannot speak to prices and availability/stock.

@C-Bag , Tony maybe the 90-degree turn is part of the problem that Bob needs to work-around here.

@racecar builder Hi Bob, Do you need a 1:1 ratio, or could a worm and worm-wheel work?
Those are likely more available:

The old go-kart I built for the kids needed some RPM reduction that I did thru multiple sprocket and chains, but a worm gear would have been easier.....

Hmm, there was not enough info to tell what he was up to. In my mind I was picturing a typical cyclekart and those are all chain drive so that’s was why I asked about chain drives.

Nutfarmer nailed it and I should have kept quiet until there was more info.

Go to an outboard junkyard and look for a couple of lower units in the 5 -7 hp range. A pair of them will give you two sets of gears.

Oh no worries here, not at all. I am NOT calling you out.
Your opinion is likely more valid than mine.

If the OP asks an open-ended question they need to be prepared for open-ended responses!
The answers they get will be due to the experience and imagination of the person making the reply from unicorn rainbows to "unexpected death accident" (an actual quote from my tractor user manual).

we have a lot of that. It's clear what's on their mind to them, but they don't fully explain, and we are left to our own devices... which most of the time wind up being far from the original question...

McMaster has an OKish selection of those, although I'm not sure what your specific requirements. I'd call them bevel gears, (which of course means that this is obviously the way it should be), but think McMaster calls them "Miter gears".

Not knowing just what you're doing, is this something that is fixed in stone, or is this something you might be able to rob out of and old worn out and torn up cheap or free lawn tractor transmission?
