Knurling Tool For 12x36 Size Lathe

I use a scissors type knurler from Shars, was something like $40. Works well on brass, steel and aluminum. One of my projects involves making brass 1/4" diameter x 0.100" knurled nuts (tapped 4-40). Scissors type is the only way to go with the long, thin brass rod. However, you might be fine with 3/8" - 2" material and a bump knurler.

The problem is less the possible wear on the spindle bearing than on the cross feed screw on the machine. Spindle bearings are similar to car wheel bearings with more precision. Cars put thousands of pounds on the bearings while in use and a thousand pounds all day while it sits. On a smaller machine the damage will occur as you use the cross feed screw to apply pressure toward the work, will damage that long before any damage to the spindle bearings. Larger machines can take the pressure on the cross and the force in type of knurler works. Go with a scissor type only.
