I wanted a U axis for the quill. This allows me to have a separate Z and U, or a combined Z/U. I have pretty much been using Z and U independently.

I also wanted it to be a minimal install, and did not want it to substantially degrade the existing operations, like setting quit stops, and allowing access to the nuts to allow quill rotation.

Notice the small channel in the 7075 angle piece; this is made to accept the magnetic scale. It will be attached with PSA.
 
As dodgy as this looks, it worked very well. I milled a piece of MDF to fit the existing Mill lands and then put drill bushings for the tap drill. Drilled the 4 holes and got a nice set of mounting holes, right where I wanted them. I modeled this portion of the head in CAD to figure out the drill bushing guide and hole locations.
