Just discovered why my cross feed on the my 10" Atlas lathe doesn't work--there's no key in the miter gear to engage with the lead screw. I believe the part number is 10F-17. Anyone have one or know where I could get one? Thanks!

Dave,

I was just reviewing your message and upon further review... I believe the key is on the 341-051 miter gear coming off the leadscrew. The stud gear you are looking at should be free wheeling. @wa5cab can confirm.

Take a look at these pics. I've included two of mine and one I found on ebay. The ebay one shows the miter gear with a key. You can clearly see there is no key on mine. I can't see any other way to drive the cross feed than this.

Yes. The key that is driven by the long slot in the lead screw is sheared off in the gear shown in your second and third photos. If you look down in the bore of the gear, you should be able to see where it used to be. People have dreamed up all manner of ways in which to fix it but personally, I would find a replacement. It won't be cheap.

Before calling Clausing, inspect the right lead screw bearing or carrier. If cracked or not an original, replace that as well. It was designed to break off if you have a crash and allow the lead screw to extract itself from the FWD-OFF-REV gear box. Or alternatively, you can modify the lathe by installing the 1 lb-ft slip clutch that was used on the final version of the 12".

Thanks. Very helpful. Will check that bearing as well.

Just to be sure, you're talking about the bearing and the carrier at the far right end of the lead screw--at the far right end of the lathe, right?

Yes. Unless the lathe is equipped with the slip clutch, the correct bearing part number is 10F-16 for the 10F, 101.07403, 101.27430 and 101.27440. This part is made of Zamak and is designed to break away from the two mounting screws in case of a crash, allowing the lead screw to extract itself from the drive in the FWD-OFF-REV gear box on a 10" or from the left bearing/support on a 12".

I just bought one from Clausing new. I think it was $30 and it was made of steel.
