New Mill ! (Index 40)

Hi All, Brought home a new to me little Index 40 verticle mill. It has set outside under a deck for several years, yesterday i soaked and tapped out the quill and removed the drive sheave. Used a needle gun to remove peeling paint on the large cast part keeping away from delicate parts. It has a single phase large drive motor and smaller motor to run the table feed. On the top somebody put what looks like the transmission from a washing machine with 3 notches for the handle. I shouldn't be working on it because a neighbor wants me to do a major overhaul (new sleves and piston) on his IH 1566. Old machinery is addictive, I have an old Monarch lathe Pat. dated 1906. Will get some help to post some pictures soon.

it's a god mill and Well Idex is still in business. mine sn is 40392H. It is not on their sn list which starts in mid 1941.

See this thread from almost a year ago. Your machine s/n is 392. The 40 is the model number.

that is one sweet old piece of iron.
i wish the designers of today could bring back a little of the style and construction of the old time iron.
