This Old Drill Press

When my wife and I bought our property in 2014, there was an old farmhouse on it. The house, itself, was not salvageable but it did contain a great deal of odds and ends left behind by the previous owners. One of which was this old drill press. When we first saw the place, it was sitting on the porch of the old house. Since that time, it has been moved from here to there to avoid my wife demanding I get rid of it. We have since torn the old house down and built a new one in its place.

Yesterday, I saw the old thing sitting over there by the shed and decided to bring it to work with me as a means of filling the odd slack time.

I have yet to find any marking on it at all, but will certainly keep an eye out for it as I get it cleaned up. Odds are, it isn't as old as it looks, but I don't know much about antique machines of this sort, so this project will be a great learning experience for me.

If anyone has any information to offer, I'm all ears.

Cheers!!

James

It's not too old- not like a so-called "Camel back" machine
It might even be a Sears or Wards variant

Interesting machine.
Looks somewhat familiar.

I look at the foot and table and it looks like somewhat modern Chinese repo.

I look at the head and think old US iron.

But then theres that motor plate that is attached to the head that just looks out of place.

It might be a mix of old and new machines, but it does look like its all been together for quite some time.

Should be interesting to find out if anyone recognizes it…

Well, I've hit a snag.

The spindle has a taper made onto the end of it.

Large end 20mm dia
Small end 19mm dia
Length 29mm

I've searched the standard taper sizes and none of them match.

Any ideas?

Some weird off sized Chinese taper maybe? I know some of the really cheap little 8” drill presses I’ve taken apart have weird, short little tapers…

Might be an option to chuck it up in the lathe and turn it to a straight stub and use a “bolt on” chuck? Not going to win any runout contests though….
