What is this tool?

I found two of these in a Gerstner for which I am its newest steward. At first I thought there were extensions for an indicator stand, but then I saw this square piece that was screwed into the end on each of them. I will add that I believe the person who had them before me MIGHT have been into some gunsmithing, if that helps. I'm just curious as to what these might be.

Push 2 of the pins down on the above tool and you can scribe parallel lines . If you need the toolmaker's gauge (above) I have 2 Starretts up here .
 
I have a couple of surface gauges. I just didn't know what these were for. What I don't have is the piece that this slides into. The ones I have don't have any graduations on them. Not a big deal. Not really a tool I will use and will likely give these away.
