Hi there,

I realize that nothing left of electrical panel of my VN12 as previous owner dismantled to move, he put in trash all the electrical panel and the main motor since it was 3 ph 550V :( , he told me that coolant pump was seized so it suffered the same fate :( , so now I am trying to figure if the table feed motor had limit switches and any other useful detail about using/rebuilding the machine.

Any info will be very appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi. My VN16 (maybe not all that different) also has an empty electrical cabinet and it's running great. The main motor is running off a VFD (Now it has variable speeds) The feeds motor died on previous owner and he put in a Dayton motor running off a rheostat (it's a chain drive system on mine, so motor size isn't too critical. If your feeds motor is 3 phase, a second VFD is in order. Many (most) vfds will accept 220v single phase or 208Y 3 phase with same VFD so it will make your mill easier to sell or relocate. Plus you can get braking ability, ramp start, Jog, overspeed etc which the old westinghouse 3 phase motor never had..... Some will even take good ol 110v. I have used the chinese ones with success on hobby equipment. I just oversize it so it will last. I have one running a hundred year old shaper and added a jog feature which is real handy....

For what it's worth, I can take pix of my stuff from electrical cabinet or trade it for something usefull....

The VN has very simple wiring. But it also lacks all safeties, so now is the time to think about e-stop buttons, braking circuits etc...

OK, so I didn't catch that main motor is missing. The original will be a 6 pole 3 phase running at about 1000 rpm rated at maybe 2 horsepower (but gobs of torque). Any similar rpm motor will work. I bought a 1HP motor like this for my shaper for 50 bucks. These are boat anchors and should be sourced locally.

Here is a link to the VN12 manual: VN 12 Manual. When I restored my VN12, I replaced all the 3 phase electronics with two VFDs to drive the motors.

Nice job and thanks for the link,

Is it required to reverse the motors?
I assume the original controls had reverse capability. VFDs allow you to control speed and direction among other things. I prefer 3 phase motors for their simplicity and long life. I try to pair them with VFds because the combination provides great functionality and control. The key is to find affordable VFDs.

Nice job and thanks for the link,

Is it required to reverse the motors?
Feed motor never needs reversed, the feed gears handle that. (and if you reverse the motor the feed goes the wrong way and the end-of-travel feed stops won't work, potential crash and damage).

Reversing the spindle is desirable but not critical. When using wheel cutters on an arbor you can flip them around, and sometimes a setup is just easier going the other way.

Hi Aaron,
Hobby-Machinist requires you to be a donating member to access the downloads section.
But also check the VintageMachinery link I posted above.
