You ever lost sleep over wanting to bid on something and knowing you could lose it in a second?
This coming week end there is going to be a farm auction. lots of old tractors, parts, and tools.
My brother has been handling a lot of the clean up and sorting.

He knows how much I like old tools and sent me a couple of pictures.
I know this is a South Bend lathe, looks like a 9 inch model A but not certain.
It is pretty dirty but that only shows it was working where it sat at one time. He also said there were a lot of parts that look like it goes to the lathe.

The owner is now well in his 90's and decided to get rid of everything. I was told that after he retired from farming he started rebuilding old tractors and purchased the lathe then. Zooming in on the bed ways I can not see a lot of wear but you all know how that goes.
I really like checking things out before I buy but in an auction that may not be that possible.

Bad thing is I will not be able to actually go but my brother and a friend will do the bidding. Thinking 5-8 hundred max. He told me most of the stuff that is going to be actioned was basically junk. To me the lathe may be a treasure, sure looks good to me, no paint and plenty of chips on it.

Wish me luck!

If you look closely at the top of the way between the chuck key and carriage above the lead screw, it appears that there is quite a ridge worn on the top of the V way. It's hard to tell from a single picture, but worth a closer look. Maybe have your bother check it out and send you a few pictures of that and other things you want a closer look at. Just something to take into consideration when bidding.

Yeah that looks like some heavy wear- you might want to pass and let someone else peel off their banknotes

Live center, carriage stop, and a taper attachment. What's not to love? Just make sure that there are no broken teeth anywhere.
Agreed, And broken teeth could be a sign of a hard life. Lets hope not.

Ted, I was looking at that earlier yesterday. But correct me because I am not sure. The line goes all the way up the the head stock. Does the carriage actually go that far? I really do not know because I have never used a SB lathe before

Yes it goes that far- see where that carriage stop is mounted?
Remember, these are old machines and many have had a hard life.

It looks like the worst of it extends to the inside edge of the chuck and then stops. The carriage might not go this far while using the 3 jaw chuck, but when you remove it to use a collet or face plate you will be going much farther towards the spindle. So, yes, I would say that machine has been heavily used up by the spindle, lack of lubrication, or both. But, depending on what type of work you want to do with it and the price you can get if for it might still be worth checking out.

Ok, I see what you are talking about now. And that does look pretty worn.
The price just went down by quite a bit.
I appreciate you guys knowledge that you can see this stuff just from a picture.
