I have to make a steel rod eye and I'm wondering what is the best metal for the job?

90x140mm spherical plain bearing. The bearing boss eye is 190 mm OD. x 90mm wide. giving me a wall cross section of about 26mm

1045 or 4140 steel ?

The old eye was screwed to the rod end. the piston and rod are made from one piece of material.

Most plated hydraulic rods were / are made from 1045 chrome plated rod. Both are higher carbon content and should work well.

The 4140 will give you a 12% margin over 1045 in tensile strength. It will probably double the cost, though.

From what I have read 4130 is somewhat lower carbon, and a bit easier to weld than 4140. You might need to preheat with either one.
