VN Best tooling to start with for VN12?

Weldon-type endmill-holders are the way to go if you have a choice and the vertical space. A VN No. 12 is a very powerful machine and if you get too carried away with your feed, you can sieze up the tool and spin it in the collet, damaging the collet. Collets are for smaller endmills, light cuts only.

The vertical space that you loose depends on the endmill-holder. The Chinese import holders that Tools4Cheap.com sold a few years back were pretty bad, they varied from 1-1/2" for the smaller sizes up to about 3-1/2" for the 1-1/4" ID holder. The vintage endmill-holders were better. I have a Weldon-brand 5/8" endmill-holder that sticks out about 1-1/4".

I'm not aware of a quick-change tool-holder system, like the Universal Quick-Switch, for the VN "C" spindle. Limited vertical space would be an issue there as well.
