Interesting. I had always known a pyrometer as a device for measuring high temperatures such as those found in foundry work, glass blowing, and ignition/exhaust gases. It measured optical emission for non contact measurement similar to what is used in the common IR thermometers today.
Obviously, the term pyrometer has a much more generic meaning.
