I have a #3 center drill ( not a spotting drill, pilot drill, twist drill) and both the package and the drill say 82 degrees. What would this be for? Can it be used with a regular lathe center of 60 degrees?

82 degrees is the angle for Sae / inch flat head screws.

Metric flat head screws are 90 degrees.

So that tool may drill and countersink in one operation for a certain screw size, in thin enough material for the pilot hole to go thru.

Counter sunk flathead inch fasters use an 82 degree angle. This is an all in one drill and counter sink tool. I would not recommend using it as a center drill. Metric fasteners us 90 degree angles.

Guess I always mistakenly thought the shape of the center drill was telling me that it was a center drill for a lathe. I’ll have to check the rest of my “center drills” Doubt they all say the angle on them. Dang.

Being realistic , if you center drilled with this and used a live center , you most likely would've seen no issues .
