My guy came up to my office door this morning and said “I think I might have dulled that drill bit yesterday...”

We’re taking up a concrete subfloor the hard way and he’s been using a 1/2” carbide bit in the rental Hilti to help break the concrete into smaller chunks. Here’s the bit — note: this was the pointy end!

Ya think?...

Yep, he definitely dulled it a bit.

Yeah, Looks like he hit a piece of rebar too.

Nope, no bar in the mix. There is wire though (chicken wire, this is a 1919 concrete pour) but I doubt that would have done it.
Our best guess is the bit jammed on aggregate or wire and snapped but he didn’t notice and kept drilling other holes with the shortened bit. There’s probably a chunk of concrete out near the bin with two inches of good Hilti steel poking out of it :)

We had some 1900’s vintage concrete in our yard. A jackhammer on an excavator had trouble breaking it up. Very stout stuff. And no wire or rebar.

Maybe next time get him a Hilti bit designed for cutting rebar. That's of course if he still works there.

That's the thing about concrete, unlike us it just gets harder as it ages. Mike
