Aside from making my own, what would be the easiest way to put an ER40 collet system on a BD920N lathe? I'm unsure if they make a system that just threads on to the spindle. I don't even know the thread pattern of the spindle off the top of my head.

So would the MT3 collet chucks I see be a good option? I have never played with collets and this is all new to me.

1 1/2" x 8 TPI. I will probably buy a MT3 collet chuck to use for certain things then make myself a collet chuck. I will look into that thread you posted a link to. Thank you.

FWIW - Double check your spindle thread. I had a 9 x 20 a few years ago and it was metric.

If you do NOT already own the ER-40 collets then this might be an option:

ER-32: http://www.bealltool.com/products/turning/colletchuck.php
ER-50: http://www.bealltool.com/products/turning/bigchuck.php

I have bought the ER-32 version for both my lathes, they work great.

I prefer the ER-32 to the MT3 spindle collets because:
i) they still allow a bar thru the headstock spindle up to the max your lathe allows, and
ii) the integral lip in the nut sits in the groove of the collet and ejects the collet when loosened....no more banging on the draw bar to loosen the collet.

EDIT: Just found a bunch of photos that I uploaded a while ago, check this thread:

HSM had a ER40 collet chuck build a few months ago. It was pretty straight forward. Just cutting the mounting threads the collet nest and the threads for the nut . they sugested buying the nut off E-bay. I just made a 5C chuck as I had those collets and the 3C just did not go big enough. The ER40 chuck makes a nicer job and the collets will handle 1/32 under the size marked. Like 1/2" will handle 15/32" The 5C you would need a 15/32 collet to handle that size.Just my 2 cents.
