Hi, I am an amateur woodworker building a slot mortising machine. I bought a very used compound sliding table on craigslist and want to restore it to use it for the mortising machine.

It needs to be disassembled, cleaned and greased. Also needs one new handwheel.

I know nothing about machines. Could someone get me started on how to take it apart and clean it. Any demos, diagrams, youtube videos, etc would be much appreciated. Like I don't even know what to clean it with.... Kerosene? WD 40?20160123_151448.jpg 20160123_151448.jpg 20160123_151811.jpg 20160123_151625.jpg 20160123_151448.jpg 20160123_151502.jpg 20160123_151502.jpg 20160123_151811.jpg

Also need to know a source for the handwheel.

Thanks! 20160123_151502.jpg 20160123_151502.jpg

Liquid Wrench or mineral spirits will work well, scrub with a Scotch Brite pad.

Lots of ways to clean it, WD40 will work, kerosene will work, mineral spirits will work, all of them will work better with a scotch brite pad to scrub with. And has been mentioned look around at McMaster Carr for the handwheel, they might have something that will work.

did you notice the oil nipples?
press oil into them till it comes out at all sides

Thanks so much for your help. Would you suggest disassembling it or just cleaning it up from the outside, perhaps squirting liquid wrench into the slide tracks and then oiling it? (My father was a machinist for 60 years and would have known exactly how to do this. Wish I could call him but alas, no long distance service in the other world....)

I would make sure that the shaft where the broken handle is, isn't bent. Does it turn freely through it's range? No wobble? If its good, clean it up and lubricate. If it holds the tolerance you are after you're good to go. Mike

Ebay also has handwheels, prolly cheaper than McMaster, I would use red scotchbrite, followed by gray, I use mineral spirits to clean, get you a stiff bristle brush for parts washers
