Drilling and tapping (8) 5/8-11 end of 1000 lb shaft

So this was fun. I gathered enough stuff around the shop to make it work.
14" I beam to sit the drill press on to get the height I needed, the shaft is 60" long.
I thought, I'd never use the huge angle plates, but I found a need.
I sat the shaft on top of a 4" bearing to help turn it.
I also needed to bore a 4" hole 6" deep in the same end as the tapped holes.
This bit helped me get there.

I have it laying down on our Series 2 Bridgeport cutting a 3/4" keyway in the end of it now.
I had to rethink a few things to make it work out.
#1 I had to make a heavy arbor for the cutter.
#2 Make large clamps to hold it down to the table.
I have it cradled in 2 vices. So far so good. Last cut tomorrow.
I do not like work with heavy stuff....
 
Geez, why didn't you use the radial drill behind you.
Looks like you could have clamped it to the table as well, and had power to spare.
 
A bridge crane or jib crane helps keep the weight off the mill table. I've had to do that lots of times. Also rough the keyway out starting with smaller cutters and working up in size.

The radial isn't tall enough. Plus it's not wired yet. (no big deal)
This was the fastest and easiest.
I just started at a fab shop, the owner wants to get more into machining.
A few machines haven't been wired or tested yet.
I'm slowly working through all the problems. There seems to be a lot...
