Explosion Proof Motor Applications

1755 is suitable for a dust collection system.
3450(nominal) is a bit fast for all but small diameter impellers or balanced larger impellers

Do you have a design in mind or are you going to adapt a motor to an existing collection system?

Typically explosion proof motors have a short duty cycle.
Had an explosion proof, fan motor on the spray-booth, in my old shop, it was rated for continuous duty.

Use a VFD on that 4 pole motor, and you can run it at 120 HZ to get the 3600RPM. I've done that on my mill, lathe, and drill press. I leave the belts at the mid range so I can get what ever spindle speed I want.

Well, I ended up not getting the motor. Why?
I think the owner realized that he was basically giving away the motor at $75 when the retail price is $1499.
He suddenly told me that he couldn't find the motor, lol.
I replied, "Congrats. No problem."

Hi Guys,
I haven't posted anything to this site for quite awhile. My home shop organization was put on hold for a very long time due to excruciating back pain. I had 3 vertabrae fused last August, and my back feels sooooo much better now .
So, I am ready to get back to getting my shop together.
Anyways, a part of my home shop issue was that I had no room. I am still selling/giving away woodworking stuff, and deliberately not buying anymore stuff. However......

I can't resist super deals, and I stumbled across a brand new explosion proof, inverter ready 2hp AC 3 ph motor.
I would use this on a dust collection system, but the rpm is only 1755.
Are there any uses for such a motor in a home workshop??

Thanks,
Susan

Plenty of uses... BUT YOU DON'T NEED IT! Too good to pass up deals are a sickness... you are better than this. You need the space more than you need the motor. It will just get in the way of what you really want to do!

Been there, done that:

$100 for the whole lot including the 5hp 3ph dust collector in the back.

With CYCLONE!

I probably would have had to pay $300 for just the Blower motor and cyclone if I hadn't taken the other motors too! It was the last day of an estate sale and the house was scheduled to be demolished in a couple of weeks.

Thanks Mike.
YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!!! The inability to pass up on deals truly is a sickness.
I am now in recovery mode where, most times, I just drool at the tool porn deals, but I don't contact the seller.
I fell off the wagon when I thought I was going to get that motor for
$75.
I love deals, and justify in my mind that I could use it, or can resell it at a profit.
Thus, I now stay away from metal shop closing auctions and estate sales.
Estate sales of old machinists who passed away are the worst since you can literally get quality stuff for practically nothing, especially if the sellers knows nothing about metalworking and vintage tools.
The last online auction that I bought from, I ended up with a $50 bearing cone heater that has a magnetic attachment it automatically shuts off once the bearing gets to a specific temperature. The only catch is that the power cord looks abused and needs replacing. Just another task to add to my list of projects I need to take care of
